Love, a prominent lawyer who later became the president of the oil company Kerr-McGee, and Margaret Eugenia Vessels Love. However, what sets Tom Love’s lineage apart is his Chickasaw heritage. Descended from two Chickasaw families named Love, his ancestors were among those forcibly relocated during the Trail of Tears. Notably, Benjamin Love, one of his forefathers, served as the official interpreter for the Chickasaw people.
Tom’s journey towards success began early in life. At the age of 13, he left home to attend St. Gregory’s High School in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where he excelled as a football player. Despite his athletic prowess, Tom’s path led him to St. John’s University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, though he left after just one semester. Subsequently, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and achieved the rank of corporal during his three-year service. Following his time in the Marines, Tom Love married and decided to give college another try, but he eventually dropped out of the University of Oklahoma in 1964.

Tom Love’s entrepreneurial spirit truly shone when he entered the business world. He initially ventured into the restaurant and car wash industries. However, it was his discovery of abandoned gas stations that set him on a transformative path.
In January 1964, Tom and his wife Judy leased a self-service gas station in Watonga, Oklahoma. This marked the beginning of his journey into the world of fuel and convenience retail. Tom went on to establish an additional 30 gas stations.
Then, in 1971, he had a groundbreaking idea—to merge self-service gas stations with convenience stores. This innovative approach paved the way for the rapid expansion of his business. Legacy and Family
Beyond his professional achievements, Tom Love’s legacy is carried forward by his family. He married Judy Love on December 26, 1961, and together they had four children. Notably, three of their children are actively involved in the family business. Frank Love and Greg Love serve as co-CEOs, while Jenny Love Meyer holds the position of vice president of communications.
In addition to her role at Love’s Travel Stops, Judy Love is the secretary of the company and serves as the president of Love’s Family Foundation.
