Before becoming president, he served as Chairman of the Economics Department and Dean of the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
Levin was appointed to the Independent Commission on United States Intelligence Capabilities on Weapons of Mass Destruction on February 6, 2004, created to investigate U.S. intelligence surrounding the 2003 invasion of Iraq and weapons of mass destruction.
