Who is Richard Levin?

Richard Charles Levin (Rick Levin), born on April 7, 1947, is an American economist and academic administrator. He was the 22nd President of Yale University from 1993 to 2013. Also, he served as the Rector and then as the Executive President of Coursera, an online education platform from March 2014 to June 2017. Richard Levin was born in San Francisco, California to Jewish-American parents and graduated from Lowell High School in 1964.

Here he was an active member of the Lowell Forensic Society and participated in regional high school debating tournaments. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University in 1968 and received a bachelor’s degree in politics and philosophy from Merton College, Oxford. He also received a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University in 1974. Levin’s academic expertise is in industrial research and development, intellectual property, rights, and productivity in manufacturing.

His Career Life

Richard Levin became an Assistant Professor of Economics at Yale in 1974 and was promoted to Professor in 1979. He became a Professor of Economics and Management at the Yale School of Management in 1982. He was appointed Frederick William Beinecke Professor of Economics in 1992. Before becoming president, he served as Chairman of the Economics Department and Dean of the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Levin was appointed to the Independent Commission on United States Intelligence Capabilities on Weapons of Mass Destruction on February 6, 2004, created to investigate U.S. intelligence surrounding the 2003 invasion of Iraq and weapons of mass destruction. He had previously served on a government commission examining the U.S. Postal Service and on an independent board appointed by Major League Baseball to study the economics of sports. Richard Levin is an executive at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, American Express and Satmetrix.

Although Levin identifies as a Democrat on Who’s Who, President George W. He was one of the first guests of the White House during Bush’s first term, and the president, who received an honorary degree from Yale in 2001, stayed at Levin’s house. Richard Levin resigned as Yale president on June 30, 2013. Shortly before his retirement as Rector of Yale University, he published a book called The Worth of the University, which is a continuation of his previous work, The Work of the University. Peter Salovey succeeded him as President of Yale. As Yale President, Levin studied what he called “the rise of Asian universities” and guided Yale’s role.
