Who is Lew Rockwell?
Lew Rockwell (Born July 1, 1944 in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American writer, editor, and political consultant known for his libertarian and anarcho-capitalist views. He is an Austrian School economist and serves as the president of the Mises Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the Austrian School of Economics. After graduating from college, Rockwell worked at Arlington House, a conservative publishing company, where he was exposed to the works and political theories of his mentor Murray Rothbard.
Reading Rothbard’s works made Rockwell an ardent believer in Austrian economics and “libertarian anarchism”. Following his ideological conversion, Rockwell continued to work as Ron Paul’s chief of staff from 1978 to 1982, and in 1982, he partnered with Rothbard to establish the Mises Institute in Alabama.
Rockwell’s website LewRockwell.com was opened in 1999 and contains articles on political philosophy, economics and contemporary politics. The slogan of the site is “anti-state and anti-war, pro-market”. The website primarily hosts right-wing libertarian writers, but left-wing anti-war writers are also prominently featured.
His Carreer Life
After finishing college, Lew Rockwell became familiar with the works of Arlington House Publishers and Ludwig von Mises. He worked at Hillsdale College in fundraising and public relations in the 1970s. In 1975, Lew Rockwell met Murray Rothbard, who convinced him to abandon minarchism and reject the state completely.
From 1978 to 1982, Lew Rockwell served as Ron Paul’s congressional chief of staff and campaigned for the Presidency of the United States under the Libertarian Party. He was also the vice chairman of Lew Paul’s exploratory committee for the 1992 Republican Party presidential nomination.
In 1982, Rockwell founded the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama and became chairman of the board of directors.
