Who is Jules Dupuit?

Jules Dupuit was a French civil engineer and economist born in Italy on May 18, 1804. He was born under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte in Italy and migrated with his family to France when he was ten years old. He received his education in Versailles and won the Physics prize upon graduation. He received his training in civil engineering at the École Polytechnique and gradually took on more responsibilities in various regional positions. In 1843, he was awarded the Légion d’honneur for his work on the French road system and shortly after, he moved to Paris. In 1848, he studied flood management and supervised the construction of Paris’ sewer system. He passed away in Paris.

In 1844, Dupuit expressed an idea about the optimal toll for a bridge in an article he wrote, introducing the concept of decreasing marginal utility. Marginal utility decreases as the amount of the product consumed increases, so having a low toll ensures that more people use the bridge. Dupuit defined this concept as a demand curve and stated that the price that maximizes public welfare is zero. Dupuit also wrote on topics such as commercial freedom, monopolies, price discrimination, and the underground water flow equation. Dupuit’s fame was due to his contributions to periodical publications and his focus on analyzing economic development capabilities.
