Who is Hui Ka Yan?

Hui Ka Yan, also known as Xu Jiayin in Mandarin Chinese, is a Chinese billionaire businessman. He is the chairman of the board and Communist Party secretary of Evergrande Group, a real estate developer in China. As of December 2021, Hui is the largest shareholder of China Evergrande Group, holding almost 60% of the company’s shares. In 2017, Evergrande Real Estate Group achieved RMB 450 billion (USD 69.5 billion) in sales. The Guangzhou-based company was the largest real estate developer in China by sales volume in 2016 and had a revenue of 211.4 billion yuan (USD 31.8 billion).

Hui Ka Yan’s estimated net worth as of December 2021 is USD 6.2 billion, making him the 462nd richest person in the world according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Although his net worth had risen to USD 45.3 billion in 2017, it has since declined. Hui Ka Yan was born in 1958 in Jutaigang Village, Gaoxian Town, Taikang County, Henan Province, China, to a peasant family.

His father was a retired soldier who had fought in the Second Sino-Japanese War in the 1930s and 1940s and became a storekeeper in the village after the establishment of the Communist State. Xu’s mother died of sepsis when he was 8 months old, and he was raised by his grandmother. After graduating from high school, he worked at a cement products factory for a few days and then worked at home for two years, leading a production team. In 1978, he took the university entrance exam again and was admitted to Wuhan Iron and Steel Institute (now Wuhan University of Science and Technology), where he served as the hygiene supervisor in his class.

Career Life:

In 1982, as a newly graduated individual, Hui Ka Yan was assigned to the heat treatment division of Wuyang Iron and Steel Company and became a joint director in 1983 and a director in 1985. He served as a director there for seven years. After resigning in 1992, he moved to Shenzhen, a newly established special economic zone in southeastern China’s Guangdong province. He was accepted into a trading company called “Zhongda,” and became the president of its branch office, “Quanda,” a year later. On October 1, 1994, Hui Ka Yan moved to Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, and founded Guangzhou Pengda Industry Co., Ltd.

In May 1996, Hui Ka Yan, with a monthly salary of 2,000 yuan, left Zhongda Group after an unsuccessful negotiation with the group’s boss. In March 1997, he started working as the founder and chairman of Evergrande Group. Hui Ka Yan is the owner of Guangzhou Evergrande football club, one of China’s most successful football clubs. In 2019, he announced a three-year investment in electric vehicles worth around $6.4 billion. In 2017, at its peak, Hui Ka Yan’s wealth was estimated to be $45.3 billion, placing him in third place on Forbes’ 2020 list of richest Chinese billionaires.

However, from 2017 to 2020, his wealth is estimated to have fallen due to increasing debts and was worsened by the coronavirus pandemic, dropping to as low as $21.8 billion. The Hurun China Rich List estimated his personal wealth to be around $11.3 billion in autumn 2021. However, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as of December 13, 2021, his net worth had dropped to $6.2 billion, losing $17.2 billion this year. This loss was partly due to the sales of his personal assets, including the sale of properties amid the Evergrande liquidity crisis. Among these sales was a London mansion worth $227 million.
