Who is Gottfried Haberler?

Gottfried Haberler (July 20, 1900 – May 6, 1995) was an Austrian-American economist who focused on international trade. In 1941, Haberler joined Princeton University where he published his book titled International Economics. This book is one of Haberler’s most significant works on international trade and economics and is still used as a textbook in schools that teach economics.

Among Haberler’s other important works are articles that examine global economic growth, inflation, and monetary policy. Haberler holds an important place in the economic literature with his works and ideas, and is still used as a reference point in economic studies. Although Gottfried von Haberler passed away in 1995, his contributions to the field of economics will not be forgotten and will be appreciated.

Education and Career:

Haberler studied economics at the University of Vienna under the supervision of Friedrich von Wieser and Ludwig von Mises, and received his doctoral degree in 1925. He taught economics and statistics at the University of Vienna from 1928 to 1936, while also undertaking extra studies in England and the United States. Haberler’s two important works were “The Theory of International Trade” (1936) and “Prosperity and Depression” (1937). These works established him as an Austrian-American economist known for his contributions to international trade and economic issues. Haberler also served as the president of the International Economic Association from 1950 to 1953.

In 1957, Haberler was appointed to prepare a report by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, and was appointed as its chairman. In his report, he identified the decline in the terms of trade for primary producers. Haberler is also known for developing the theory of opportunity cost and contributing to the work of pioneers such as John Stuart Mill and Friedrich von Wieser. In 1971, he left Harvard University to become a permanent scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. However, he passed away from Parkinson’s disease in 1995.

Achievements and Legacy:

Gottfried Haberler is recognized as an author in the field of international trade, and his work “The Theory of International Trade” (1937) is considered a classic. His reformulation of the comparative cost theory in terms of opportunity cost had a significant impact. By presenting the production transformation curve (now known as the production possibilities frontier), he allowed for the consideration of the effects of multiple variables in the production process. This led to important insights in the theory of international trade.

Haberler also revitalized the doctrine of purchasing power parity, which states that relative price levels determine balanced exchange rates. His impressive work on the flexibility and stability of exchange rates, as well as his studies on customs tariffs, are also noteworthy. In 1959, Haberler was an advanced thinker who advocated for free trade as an effective policy for developing countries.
