George Reisman is an American economist who was born on January 13, 1937. He currently serves as an Honorary Professor of Economics at Pepperdine University. Reisman is known in the field of economics as a staunch defender of free market or laissez-faire capitalism.

Who is George Reisman?

George Reisman is an American economist born in New York. He completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia College in 1957 and his doctoral degree at New York University under the guidance of Ludwig von Mises. In his thesis, he translated Mises’s methodological article “The Epistemological Problems of Economics” from German to English and received his doctoral degree.

In the 1980s, George Reisman and his wife, psychologist Edith Packer, founded the Jefferson School of Philosophy, Economics, and Psychology. The school’s activities included conferences and seminars held at San Diego California University. Many prominent figures such as Canadian-American philosopher Leonard Peikoff, Hungarian-American theoretical physicist Edward Teller, and Czech-American electrical engineering professor Petr Beckmann taught at the school.

According to many who follow his work, Reisman was influenced by his doctoral advisor and mentor Mises in his thoughts and work. However, there are also those who say that Ayn Rand influenced him at least as much as Mises.
