Who is Falguni Nayar?

Falguni Sanjay Nayar (born February 19, 1963), the founder and CEO of Nykaa, a beauty and lifestyle retail company, and owner of a company called FSN E-Commerce Ventures, which stands for her initials. Nayar is one of two self-made female Indian billionaires.

Nayar was born and raised in a Gujarati family in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Her father was a businessman who ran a small bearing company with the help of her mother. Nayar holds a B.Com degree from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics and a postgraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (class of 1985).

Falguni Nayar married Sanjay Nayar, whom she met at business school, in 1987. Sanjay Nayar is the CEO of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts India. The couple has two children, twins Adwaita Nayar and Anchit Nayar. Adwaita is the CEO of Nykaa Fashion, while Anchit heads the retail and e-commerce divisions.

Career Life:

After leaving her consulting job at A.F. Ferguson & Co. in 1993, Nayar joined the Kotak Mahindra Group. At Kotak Mahindra, she initially headed the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) team, and later opened corporate equity offices in London and New York. She returned to India in 2001. In 2005, she was appointed as the Managing Director of Kotak Mahindra Capital’s investment banking unit and a board member of Kotak Securities, the corporate equity arm. She left her job in 2012.

In April 2012, at the age of 50, she founded Nykaa with her own money, spending $2 million. Nykaa was valued at $2.3 billion as of 2021, and Nayar’s wealth was estimated to be around $1.1 billion. Following Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Nayar is the second Indian woman to become a self-made billionaire. Nykaa went public on November 10, 2021, with a valuation of $13 billion. Shortly after Nykaa went public, Nayar’s wealth increased by $6.5 billion, making her the richest Indian woman billionaire and one of the top 20 richest Indians in terms of net worth. In 2022, Nayar was ranked 44th on the Forbes India Rich List.
