Caio Koch Weser was born on July 25, 1944, in Rolândia, Brazil. He is a Brazilian-German financial expert and former high-ranking German financial official. Who is Caio Koch Weser?

Caio Koch Weser was born to parents who, along with his grandmother, left Bremerhaven during the Nazi era. His grandfather was Erich Koch-Weser, a DDP politician who served as Justice Minister (1928-1929) and Deputy Prime Minister (1920) during the Weimar Republic. In 1933, Koch-Weser’s family emigrated to Rolândia, Brazil, where his grandfather established a coffee plantation and a German colony.

Caio Koch Weser is a German and Brazilian citizen. He is married to Maritta Rogalla von Bieberstein Koch-Weser, who worked for the World Bank for 20 years (1980-1998) and is now a board member of Earth3000 and GEXIE (Global Exchange for Social Investments) and the German Climate Fund. They have three children.

Koch-Weser started working for the World Bank in 1973 and served as Vice President from 1991 and as Managing Director from 1996. In May 1999, he became State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Finance in the Schröder I government. In 2000, he was the first candidate of the German government for the position of Managing Director and Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund, but was rejected by the US, and Horst Köhler was subsequently elected.

In October 2005, Caio Koch Weser announced that he would leave the Ministry of Finance at his own request. He then moved to the private financial sector and became an extended member of the Management Board of Deutsche Bank in January 2006. As Vice Chairman, he reported directly to the Chairman of the Management Board and served as a consultant to the bank’s clients.

While at the Finance Ministry, he was primarily responsible for bank supervision. During his tenure as State Secretary, he approved the controversial management structure of the German Bank, although the Ministry of Justice expressed serious concerns.

In March 2008, the Berlin Republic Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation into Deutsche Bank regarding the state guarantee for the Ostsee Pipeline and identified Koch-Weser as a suspect. The allegation against Koch-Weser in this investigation was that he wrongly approved the guarantee. However, the investigation was eventually dropped due to a lack of evidence.
