Finn Erling Kydland, born December 1, 1943, is a Norwegian economist known for his contributions to business cycle theory. The eldest of six siblings, Finn Erling Kydland grew up on a family farm in Gjesdal, Søyland in the Jæren agricultural region of southwestern Norway. He remembers that he was raised in a liberal way, without his parents imposing many restrictions on their children. Finn Kydland became interested in mathematics and economics when he was a young adult, after taking an accounting job on a friend’s mink farm.
With his new interest in theoretical economics, Kydland received a bachelor’s degree from NHH in 1968 and a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon in 1973. After completing his doctorate, he returned to NHH as an assistant professor. in 1978, he returned to Carnegie Mellon as a professor. He has been living in the United States ever since.
